Adventist Health Portland Celebrates 10th Anniversary of First Friday Community Gathering

Adventist Health Portland will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its monthly First Friday gathering on April 3. The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Adventist Health Portland Amphitheaters and will feature a special program highlighting a decade of community, storytelling and meaningful connection. A complimentary soup and salad dinner will be served at 6 p.m.

First Friday began as a grassroots effort to create a welcoming space for people in Southeast Portland to experience belonging, hope and authentic community. Over the past decade, the gathering has drawn presenters who have shared personal stories, music and messages that focus on whole-person well-being and encouragement.

This year’s anniversary event will feature artist, author and performance speaker Scott Erickson, known for work that blends visual art, autobiography and spiritual reflection. Erickson is the author of Honest Advent and Say Yes, and his artwork has appeared on CNN, National Geographic and in numerous publications. Music will be provided by Joyce and GJ Newmyer.

Dr. Terry Johnsson, vice president for Mission and Community Integration at Adventist Health Portland, said the anniversary marks an important milestone for a movement that continues to grow.

“First Friday began as a simple, grassroots effort to create a place where every person could experience belonging, hope and connection without fear of judgment,” Johnsson said. “Over the last decade, this gathering has grown into a meaningful tradition rooted in joyful praise and genuine community.
