Loving, impactful care when extra support is needed
Children with complex mental health issues may need to stay in the hospital at times. When this happens, we step in to support them and their family with dedicated pediatric inpatient care in an environment that is safe and supportive. Adventist Health Vallejo has a dedicated unit for children ages 3 to 12, with adolescent and adult care offered completely separately within the hospital.
Short-term care built to have a long-term impact
Our focus is to give your child short-term care during a mental health crisis. From the time your child comes into the hospital, we follow a clinical pathway based on your child’s diagnosis. These steps are designed to stabilize your child’s behavior and to teach your child and family skills that can help your child cope after they leave the hospital and help you prevent crises in the future.
Expert, personalized care and support
Our team draws from a wide range of therapies and techniques to create a treatment program that meets each child’s individual needs, including:
Comprehensive mental health care built specially for children
During their stay, your child will meet regularly with a variety of providers (doctors, therapists, and childhood mental health specialists) and participate in groups with other children. Our program provides a unique psychiatric setting focused on providing safe, structured, and evidence-informed care.
A team of experts focused on pediatric mental health
Inpatient mental health services staff includes psychiatrists, registered nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, and other mental health specialists. Our patient-satisfaction surveys consistently include positive feedback about our dedicated, compassionate professionals.
Evidence-based therapeutic programs
By providing appropriate activities, our young patients get a chance to take their minds off the situation at hand and focus that energy on something positive and productive.
Some of these activities include:
- Group therapy sessions focused on mental health issues
- Age-appropriate group games and activities
- Educational groups focused on ways of coping with problems that contributed to hospitalization
- Groups focused on the development of social and communication skills
- Education and group therapy focused on chemical dependency and addictive behaviors
- Education classes taught by a trained special education teacher
- Art, movement and play therapy sessions
- Family group sessions offering information and support
- Family therapy sessions
Supporting your family
You and your family play an important role in helping your child succeed back at home, in school, and in your community. So we want you to take part in all aspects of your child’s care, like education sessions and family evaluations. Your child’s care team will talk with you about any services that may be helpful. We invite you to tell us things that will help us know and care for your child.
Preparing to go home
When your child is ready to go home, our team provides support for your child to make the return as easy as possible. At discharge, each person will receive an individualized aftercare plan that’s been designed by the treatment team. We make plans with you to get any ongoing care for your child after they return home. We also follow up later to ensure the plans made in the hospital are being carried out.
