Family Medicine Residency

Why choose our family medicine residency? 

We are located two hours north of San Francisco in rural Northern California. Our winding roads that span the mountain ranges are just one of the unique challenges our community faces in accessing healthcare. Working closely with supportive faculty, our residents have a tangible effect on the health of the community through projects such as our street medicine clinic and partnerships with local advocacy organizations. Adventist Health Ukiah Valley is the place to come if you are passionate about making a difference while receiving rigorous, full-spectrum training.

About our Graduate Medical Education (GME) program 

As the only residency in both Mendocino and Lake Counties, our unopposed residency aims to create full-spectrum family physicians who are well trained to take on the needs of these rural and diverse counties. Our family medicine residents should not only be aware of the unique challenges of our rural community, but ready to embrace them in light of the important work we are doing. We love our hospital and the community we serve. 

The hospital serves as the primary medical center for the entire county, including the coastal communities (i.e. Fort Bragg, Point Arena) who are separated from inland resources by poor road access and limited telephone/wireless service. The residency clinics primarily serve the inland communities (i.e. Ukiah, Willits), which includes many of the nine Indian reservations within Mendocino County borders (the fourth most of any county in the United States).  We also have a Street Medicine Clinic, where we work with the sizeable homeless population within Ukiah. 

Neighboring Mendocino County, Lake County sits just to the east, a predominantly agricultural community known for having the largest lake entirely within California.  Its two major cities are Clearlake and Lakeport, each are served by a hospital Adventist Health Clear Lake, which our program offers elective rotations.  With every turn you will see stunning scenery of mountains that surround the lake and the people you meet are kind and proud of their roots. While abundantly beautiful and full of diverse life experiences, Lake County faces high rates of substance use and ranks in the bottom 25% of all US counties for life expectancy.
