Adventist Health Portland’s occupational therapy program is in the business of helping you get back to the business of living your life. Our focus on your whole-person health is easily seen in our approach to occupational therapy. Our therapists really listen to what your concerns are. We want to understand your personal goals for recovery and improvement. What do you want to achieve? We want to know so we can partner with you to create a therapy plan customized for your life, not just your diagnosis.

Supporting individuals with a wide range of conditions

Occupational therapy focuses on how you use your body during your typical activities — those “occupations” you do throughout your day, in the process of going through your normal life. That means our therapists’ job is to help you reach your goals for returning to your normal lifestyle after an injury or surgery — or make everyday tasks easier if you’re living with a disability or long-term condition such as:

  • Neurological conditions like stroke and Parkinson’s disease
  • Hand and finger conditions, including neuropathies, dislocations, fractures, arthritis, and tendinopathies
  • Elbow tendonitis — like tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
  • Sprains and strains
  • Carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel (ulnar nerve)
  • Trigger finger

Our patients include people recovering from injury, surgery, stroke, and other sudden changes in their condition. Other patients are living with long-term disabilities or conditions. We also treat a variety of pediatric conditions.

Personalized treatment plans

Our occupational therapists are specially educated and trained in how to help you evaluate your condition, home, or workplace and to make a custom treatment plan to help you achieve your goals for daily living. During the 60-minute sessions, our occupational therapists will look at how you do your daily tasks and give you advice on how to make it easier and safer to live your life. They may even collaborate directly with our physical therapy team to provide comprehensive care for your unique needs. Our treatment specialties include:

  • Custom splinting for arthritis, carpal tunnel, fractures, tendonitis and post-surgical conditions
  • Joint protection
  • Adaptations for and use of adaptive equipment in the activities of daily living
  • LSVT BIG program, which is a unique treatment for Parkinson’s disease
  • Neuromuscular rehabilitation

If you’re looking for a truly personal approach to occupational therapy, ask your primary care provider to send a referral to us. Our team will contact you to help you arrange your health insurance authorization and schedule your first appointment.
