Third da Vinci 5 System Added to Expand Robotic Surgery

Adventist Health Portland is expanding its robotic surgery capabilities with the addition of a third da Vinci 5 system, the newest generation of Intuitive’s robotic surgical technology.

With three da Vinci 5 systems, Adventist Health Portland now has the largest fleet of da Vinci 5 platforms of any hospital in Portland. The addition increases robotic surgery capacity and scheduling flexibility, giving surgeons across a range of specialties greater access to minimally invasive technology when appropriate for a procedure.

Advancing robotic surgery

The da Vinci 5 includes several advancements designed to support surgical precision and performance. One of the most significant is Force Feedback, which allows surgeons to sense resistance at the instrument tips during a procedure.

“Force Feedback is one of the most meaningful advancements of the da Vinci 5 platform because it allows surgeons to feel resistance at the instrument tips,” says Ryland Stucke, MD, chair of Adventist Health Portland Multi-Specialty Surgery. “That added information can help us use more deliberate force during delicate steps such as dissection, retraction and suturing. Combined with improved visualization, ergonomics and performance data, the technology gives surgeons additional tools to continually refine how we operate and care for our patients.”

The platform also includes enhanced 3D visualization, a redesigned surgeon console and expanded computing capabilities that support surgical performance, workflow and continuous learning.

Expanding a comprehensive surgical program

The new system supports Adventist Health Portland’s broader surgical program, which includes 11 operating rooms and surgeons representing a wide range of specialties.

The Adventist Health Portland Multi-Specialty Surgery Clinic provides general, bariatric, colorectal, breast, thoracic and vascular surgery, while additional specialists from across the medical community also perform procedures at the hospital.

The addition of a third da Vinci 5 reflects Adventist Health Portland’s continued investment in technology, clinical expertise and infrastructure to support advanced surgical care for communities throughout Portland and throughout Oregon.
