Bariatric and Weight Loss Care
A proven way to lose weight and regain hope
If you struggle with weight loss and have had difficulty achieving your goals through dieting or exercise, you may want to consider bariatric surgery. This proven procedure for treating obesity reduces the size or structure of your stomach, thereby decreasing appetite and calorie consumption. By helping you lose weight, bariatric surgery can resolve a range of health issues and improve your overall quality of life.
Expert treatment and compassionate support
Adventist Health Ukiah Valley specializes in bariatric surgery and is backed by proven outcomes for our patients. We offer a couple surgical options along with a complete range of support to help you before and after your surgery.
Gastric banding
This minimally invasive option uses an implant to reduce the stomach's capacity to hold food. The implant is made of an inflatable, silicone band, and will be placed around the top portion of your stomach to create a smaller stomach “pouch.” You will start to feel full when this pouch fills up, so you should feel full faster, and not feel hungry as often. Gastric banding does not affect digestion or absorption.
Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy
This is one of the most popular weight-loss procedures. In this minimally invasive procedure, the stomach is stapled to create a thin “sleeve,” and the rest of the stomach is removed. This restricts the amount of food that you can eat and changes the way the stomach produces the hunger hormone called ghrelin, reducing the feeling of hunger, and resulting in weight loss.
Support and resources
While bariatric surgery can be lifechanging, we understand that surgery can be intimidating. That’s why we offer the resources and support to help you learn more and become more comfortable with the procedure. Of course, you will also have a consultation with a member of our bariatric surgical team, who will walk you through our process and your options.
Bariatric surgery is most successful when accompanied by changes in eating habits and physical activity. So, before and after your surgery, we will connect you with providers who can help you on your journey, and schedule you for consultations on nutrition and weight loss practices, including one on one appointments, and support group meetings.
We’ll do everything possible to set you up for success and to put you at ease — physically, emotionally and spiritually — so you can remain focused on the great results!
Are you a candidate for bariatric surgery?
While bariatric surgery has been successful for many patients, it is not for everyone. It is offered as an alternative for individuals who consistently struggle to lose weight though non-surgical methods, and whose health is compromised because of their weight.
