Karl Dambacher contracted COVID-19 in July 2021. His condition worsened, and he was admitted to Adventist Health Sonora’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he was placed on a ventilator for more than two days.

“I had a heightened awareness that people were concerned about how I was doing on a daily basis,” he remembers about his weeks-long hospital stay. “I had such a positive assurance that I was…almost being blessed.”

Karl credits his Christian faith and Adventist Health Sonora caregivers with his survival. “Because of the quality of services I got, you guys literally saved my life,” he says.

Karl is still recovering from some lingering side effects of COVID-19, which have made him pay closer attention to his health and notice a prostate issue. A recent appointment with Adventist Health Sonora urologist Lincoln Maynes, MD, brought Karl “the saddest news of my life” – a cancer diagnosis. Yet Karl feels at peace about his upcoming surgery.

“There’s a relationship [with Adventist Health Sonora] of trust, so that when I really need help, like I do now…I have a sense of trust, and I’m at ease.”
