Bringing care to Marysville and beyond

Learn more about our history, from the gift of Phebe Rideout to the growth of Adventist Health.

Beginnings: A generous gift transforms a community

In 1907, Marysville was a thriving city, the largest between Sacramento and Portland, Oregon. With its impressive architecture, bustling economy, and cultural prominence, Marysville had much to offer. However, it lacked a crucial resource: a hospital. At the time, those needing medical care had to endure the expense and delays of traveling to Sacramento or beyond for treatment. Recognizing this need, Phebe Rideout, a remarkable woman from a family of California pioneers, donated her family’s 4,000-square-foot mansion to be converted into Marysville’s first public hospital. This act of generosity marked the beginning of a legacy of healthcare for the Yuba-Sutter region.

Over the years, Mrs. Rideout’s home grew from a modest hospital into a comprehensive community health organization. By the 1920s, Fremont Medical Center also began serving the area. Both institutions operated independently until 1983, when their leadership united to better serve our community’s healthcare needs. The resulting organization, United Communities Medical Services, later became Fremont-Rideout Health Group in 1992, and in 2012, it was renamed Rideout Health.

Becoming Adventist Health and Rideout

In May 2018, Rideout Health joined Adventist Health, becoming Adventist Health and Rideout. This partnership brought together two mission-driven healthcare networks, combining resources to better serve the community. Governed by a 15-member volunteer Board of Directors, Adventist Health and Rideout continues to operate as a not-for-profit, community-based healthcare system.

Today, Adventist Health and Rideout remains dedicated to providing exceptional care. With one of the lowest average daily rates for hospital stays in California, the organization offers a wide range of services, including general medical, and surgical care, intensive care, heart care, cancer care, neurosurgery, and more. The compassionate team of associates, medical staff, and volunteers — part of Adventist Health’s 35,000-strong network — share a commitment to the mission of living God’s love by inspiring health, wholeness and hope.

From a single hospital in a donated mansion to a modern healthcare leader, Adventist Health and Rideout continues to honor its legacy of care while innovating for the future.
