In addition, we work with OHSU surgeons for urology and orthopedic services to ensure that patients benefit from a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach right here on our campus.

More precision, more experience

Surgery is a big decision. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with a condition that may require surgery, you and your family should take time to learn about all your medical options. Whether you’re looking for a second opinion or searching for your best option, you can trust the team at Adventist Health Portland to provide the care you need.

Our operating rooms

Featuring 11 modern operating rooms and two da Vinci surgical robots, we offer cutting-edge, minimally invasive procedures for a variety of conditions. Loved ones can stay informed and at ease with our comfortable waiting area, equipped with information monitors to track your progress during surgery.

Minimally invasive robotic procedures

Our two da Vinci Xi Surgical Systems brings the most advanced robotic technology to patients and physicians, providing alternatives to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy. This system puts a surgeon’s hands at the controls of state-of-the-art robotic platforms, enabling these experts to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched precision.

Benefits of robotic surgery include less scarring, smaller incisions, less risk of infection, and fewer complications. That means a shorter hospital stay, less pain, and a faster recovery.

Outpatient surgery unit

Our outpatient “short-stay” unit is located on the third floor of our medical center. Most people heal fastest when they are surrounded by their loved ones in a familiar setting. That's why our surgeons and care teams use the least invasive options for surgery and do everything they safely can get back home quickly. Thanks to surgical advances like robotic-assisted and laparoscopic surgeries, many surgeries can occur in the morning, and you can recover in the comfort and convenience of your own home later that same day.

Postsurgical recovery unit

Caring for patients during their inpatient stay after surgery is a top priority in our dedicated inpatient surgical unit. This specialized team provides compassionate support to promote healing and comfort, including effective pain management, vital sign monitoring, and prevention of complications like infections, or blood clots. Nurses assist with mobility and offer support to ease anxiety, ensuring a safe and smooth recovery. Clear communication about post-surgery care and next steps empowers patients and prepares them for discharge and continued healing at home.

Pre-surgery orientation

Your treatment begins before your surgery with a pre-surgery orientation (PSO) appointment. Scheduled by our office, this visit — either in person or by phone — includes gathering your medical history, completing paperwork, and receiving educational materials about your procedure. The PSO appointment streamlines your admission process, coordinates referrals, and answers your questions so you know what to expect.

Reaching for Help: A Surgery Story

For years Elsy Dinvil wore puffy sweaters, tops, and coats in public — not to warm up, but to cover the lump bulging out above her left hip. “It was humongous, easily the size of a tennis ball,” she recalls. At first the lump wasn’t painful, so Elsy just put up with it. Then, Elsy realized she needed help. Read Elsy’s story to see how our surgical team helped her find a solution.
