Martin-O’Neil Cancer Center earns reaccreditation from national leaders in quality
The Martin-O’Neil Cancer Center at Adventist Health St. Helena has once again earned accreditation from the Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). This three-year reaccreditation underscores the center’s consistent excellence in delivering comprehensive, multidisciplinary cancer care while meeting the CoC’s rigorous standards.
The recognition highlights the center’s team-based model of care, bringing together surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists and other cancer specialists. This collaborative approach ensures each patient receives personalized treatment planning and coordinated care with a focus on quality and outcomes.
“I’m proud of our cancer center team—not just for achieving reaccreditation, but for the compassion and excellence they show daily,” says Steven Herber, MD, President of Adventist Health St. Helena. “Our community deserves the best, and we’re proud to deliver that here in the Napa Valley.”
The CoC Accreditation Program provides a nationally recognized framework that guides cancer programs in delivering care across the full continuum—from prevention and early detection through treatment, rehabilitation and survivorship. Patients at CoC-accredited centers also benefit from access to clinical trials, nurse navigation, genetic counseling, psychosocial support and personalized survivorship care planning.
“Our tumor boards and clinics apply the latest therapies that often rival academic centers,” adds Tyler Kang, MD, medical oncologist, hematologist and chair of the center’s CoC committee. “Through our national clinical trial affiliations, patients receive advanced treatment options close to home.”
All CoC-accredited centers maintain a cancer registry and contribute data to the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB), one of the world’s largest resources for tracking and analyzing cancer outcomes. This allows programs to benchmark performance and continuously improve care.
“When patients choose local care, they can be confident they’re receiving comprehensive, state-of-the-art treatment,” says Ari Umutyan, MD, medical oncologist and medical director of the Martin-O’Neil Cancer Center. “This reaccreditation is meaningful validation of our team’s commitment to excellence, collaboration and compassionate care.”
