A Journey Back to Independence — John’s Story of Healing and Hope

At Adventist Health Lodi Memorial, we have the privilege of witnessing incredible stories of strength, resilience, and recovery every day. One such story belongs to John Doyle, whose journey through injury and healing reminds us why compassionate and expert care matters so deeply.  

An unexpected fall that changed everything 

John’s path to our Acute Physical Rehabilitation unit began suddenly. While helping his wife during a health issue, he experienced an unexpected fall that resulted in a broken hip. In his own words, “That’s when the fun began.” Navigating the pain and uncertainty that followed wasn’t easy; but John approached each step of his recovery with courage.  

John recalls that his experience “started painful and ended wonderful.” Through surgery, therapy, and eventually release from care, he describes his time with our team as extremely helpful, positive, and effective.  “[It] has created the foundation of my healing,” John says.   

Rebuilding strength and confidence with “the A Team” 

For John, the heart of his recovery was the team surrounding him. “You are truly the A Team,” he says. “Professional and compassionate care based on the science of recovery has been a Godsend.” He credits the providers, therapists, nurses, and support staff with helping him rebuild strength, confidence, and hope. He also notes, “The food is good here too.”  

When asked what guidance he’d offer to someone in a similar situation, John shares, “Pay attention, trust the process, do the work, and you’ll be well ahead on your way to recovery.”  

With his time in rehab behind him, John is excited for what’s next. He looks forward to returning to his normal routines — moving freely, staying active and using the safety techniques he learned in therapy to protect his independence and well‑being. 

John’s story is a powerful reminder of what recovery can look like when determination meets exceptional care. We’re grateful he chose Adventist Health Lodi Memorial to walk alongside him on this journey and even more grateful for the inspiration he now shares with others.
