Meet the expert surgeons providing advanced breast care in Glendale
Choosing the right care team
Choosing the right surgeon can be one of the most important decisions you make when facing a breast cancer diagnosis. At the Sam and Grace Carvajal Comprehensive Breast Center at Adventist Health Glendale, we’ve brought together some of the region’s leading experts in breast surgery. Our fellowship-trained surgeons combine advanced training and experience with a commitment to raising the standard of care for our community.
“We’re focused on one goal — providing the best possible outcome and experience for every patient,” said Dennis Holmes, MD, breast surgeon and medical director of the Sam and Grace Carvajal Comprehensive Breast Center. “Our experts have trained and practiced at top institutions, contributed to national research, and remain leaders in their fields. But they’ve chosen to serve in Glendale, providing personalized, high-level care close to home.”
Our Comprehensive Breast Center is one of the few in California that offers a full continuum of patient-centered, comprehensive breast care. This approach ensures our team of specialists work together to design care that fits your unique journey.
Personalized treatment options
Dr. David Foulad, breast surgical oncologist, specializes in services including breast biopsy, mastectomy (including nipple-sparing), lumpectomy, oncoplastic surgery, lymph node biopsy, benign breast disease care, and genetic testing.
“We’re using evidence-based care approaches and the latest minimally invasive techniques,” he said. “We don’t just treat breast cancer — we tailor every treatment plan based on the patient’s goals, life circumstances, and what matters most to them.”
Dr. Foulad is also implementing leading-edge treatments that can remove tumors through incisions as small as a pencil eraser, often leaving little to no scarring. “These advances are helping us reduce physical trauma and ease the emotional burden of surgery,” he explained.
For Dr. Foulad, care goes beyond delivering a diagnosis or treatment. It’s about being there for his patients during some of their most vulnerable moments. “That’s a profound responsibility, and it inspires me daily.”
Reconstructive expertise close to home
Dr. Peter Ashjian, our board-certified plastic surgeon, specializes in advanced aesthetic and restorative techniques, including implant-based and flap (autologous) reconstruction, which uses a patient’s own tissue for a more natural look and feel.
“It’s remarkable how far we’ve come,” he said. “Our patients now have more choices and better results than ever before.”
Dr. Ashjian works closely with you and your oncology team to plan reconstruction from the very beginning, often performing it immediately after mastectomy.
“When patients don’t have to choose between convenience and quality, they are more likely to complete their full course of treatment,” he said. “That continuity is key to long-term recovery and satisfaction with their results.”
