Leading-edge technology and procedures

Our experienced surgical team remains at the forefront of today’s most sophisticated and effective technology and procedures. Residents of San Luis Obispo County can easily access the highest level of surgical care close to home.

Advanced surgical technology, featuring robotic capability

We have invested in the latest surgical technology in order to provide our community with the best care, close to home.

da Vinci robotic surgical system

This advanced robotic technology provides alternatives to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy. The system puts a surgeon’s hands at the controls of advanced robotic platforms, enabling them to perform even the most complex, delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched precision.

SAVI Scout

A non-invasive, non-radioactive surgical guidance system, SAVI Scout provides real-time navigation during breast surgery to localize and remove small, non-palpable breast tumors and lymph nodes.

O-arm stealth navigation

Using Medtronic's O-arm, StealthStation technologies, and reduced radiation, this surgical imaging system enables surgeons to visualize a patient's anatomy and track surgical instruments during procedures.

Procedures on the cutting edge of medicine

The types of conditions that can be treated by surgery are growing, and at the same time the techniques to treat them are expanding as well. At Adventist Health, we proudly partner with the exceptional physicians on our medical staff to bring these treatments — and the outcomes they deliver — to the Central Coast, including those described below.

Blue light cystoscopy

This enhanced imaging procedure is used to detect and diagnose tumors in the bladder and is particularly effective in finding tumors too small to locate with a standard scope examination of the bladder.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)

Combining X-ray and endoscopy, ERCP is used to diagnose and treat conditions in the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL)

ESWL is a non-invasive procedure used to break up stones inside the urinary tract, bile ducts, and pancreatic duct with a series of targeted shock waves. Once the stones are broken up into smaller pieces, they may pass through the body or become easier to remove with a minimally invasive procedure.

Ion robotic bronchoscopy

This minimally invasive procedure uses a robotic system to diagnose and treat lung conditions. It is especially effective in accessing difficult-to-reach lung nodules in order to diagnose lung cancer in its earliest stages.

Oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF)

During this minimally invasive approach to spinal fusion surgery, the neurosurgeon accesses and repairs the lower (lumbar) spine from the front and side of the body by passing in a specialized instrument about halfway between the middle of the stomach and the side of the body.

Transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR)

TCAR is a minimally invasive procedure, which clears blockages and opens narrowed carotid arteries. During the procedure, blood flow in the blocked area is reversed in order to reduce the risk of stroke and enable your surgeon to reopen the artery with a surgical balloon and stents.

Yttrium-90 (Y90) treatment

Targeted radiation therapy is used to treat liver tumors by injecting tiny radioactive beads into the blood vessels that supply the tumors. The beads emit radiation that destroys the cancer cells while sparing healthy liver tissue.
