Combining compassion and care
Diabetes is a complex disease, but we are here to help you monitor and maintain your health. Our registered dietitian will partner with your physician to tailor a plan to meet your specific needs and help you stay on track.
A holistic approach to diabetes
Diabetes affects your body's ability to either produce or properly use insulin and is categorized as Type 1, Type 2, or gestational.
- A lifelong condition, Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body has difficulty producing insulin and can’t convert sugar to energy. This type is an autoimmune condition requiring lifelong insulin therapy paired with an individualized lifestyle approach
- Type 2 diabetes typically occurs in adulthood and increases the body’s resistance to insulin. Often linked to lifestyle factors, this form can be managed through diet, exercise, and medication.
- Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy and usually ends afterwards, however women with gestational diabetes are at an increased risk for developing Type 2 diabetes.
Testing and diagnosis
Diabetes is diagnosed by testing the level of glucose found in your blood. Three tests can measure your blood glucose level.
- For a fasting blood glucose test, you will not eat or drink anything except water for at least eight hours before the test. Since food impacts your blood sugar level, this test enables your doctor to determine your baseline blood sugar level.
- A random blood glucose test can be taken at any time, regardless of whether you have recently had food or drink.
- An A1c test provides the average blood glucose level over a period of months.
