Our advanced tests and procedures

Depending on your symptoms, health history, and physical exam, your gastroenterologist may use tests or procedures to detect and/or treat what is going on in your digestive system. You can rest assured knowing our specialists are highly skilled and equipped to perform these procedures. Learn more about some of them below.

Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is used to examine the inside of the colon and rectum to detect conditions such as cancer, polyps or ulcers, and pinpoint the causes of bleeding, abdominal pain, or weight loss. It is performed using a scope while the patient is under sedation.

Capsule endoscopy

This innovative procedure examines the inside of the digestive tract using a capsule the size of a pill. The capsule contains a camera, light, battery, and radio transmitter that records and sends images to a provider or specialist for diagnostic purposes. The capsule is eventually passed in a bowel movement.

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)

This procedure is used to examine the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum to pinpoint and treat problems such as ulcers, or varices (dilated veins), in the upper gastrointestinal tract. It is performed using a scope while the patient is under sedation.

Esophageal manometry

This procedure assesses how well the muscles of the esophagus are working. A small catheter is inserted through the nose, which then measures the pressure of the muscles.

Bravo reflux testing

This pH test uses a capsule to measure the amount of acid in the esophagus for up to 96 hours. This helps evaluate the frequency and duration of acid reflux to better understand your symptoms.

Digitrapper pH-Z testing system

This catheter-based test measures the amount and duration of stomach acid in multiple locations, including the esophagus and pharynx.

Radiofrequency ablation of Barrett’s esophagus

This procedure applies heat to remove precancerous tissue from the esophagus in Barrett’s esophagus patients. These patients are less likely to progress to esophageal cancer, compared to patients who undergo surveillance only.
