Dedicated to Saving Lives...and a Country

Kyi Kyi Thwin Win, MD, an Adventist Health Sonora internal medicine provider, is dedicated to saving lives… and a country.

“I’m going to work because I have to save a country and a people,” she says, adding that she loves her job, which enables her to care for people close to home and across the world in her homeland.

Dr. Win and her husband James, both natives of Burma (also known as Myanmar), came to the United States as teenagers. They have concentrated their financial resources on their native country since a February 2021 military coup and subsequent resistance movement brought widespread fighting, destruction, displacement and poverty.

The Wins finance about 15 projects and organizations in Burma, providing both ongoing support and targeted funding. They give a monthly stipend to a pastor and his feeding program, have provided funds to help build a well and purchase cell phones, support Christian outreach to refugees and more. The Wins also make monthly treks to San Francisco to join other demonstrators protesting the military takeover and human rights abuses.

Local hospice patients have benefited from the Wins’ generosity to Adventist Health Sonora’s Hospice Patient Support Fund, but their native land is at the heart of their philanthropy. “We live in the most beautiful place next to Heaven,” James said of Tuolumne County, “but [Burma] is our birth country. We are obligated to help these people.

“When others have a need, we meet it.”
