Adventist Health Delano Celebrates 50 Years of Transformative Healthcare

Adventist Health Delano proudly celebrated its 50th anniversary on September 25, marking five decades of dedicated service to the Delano and surrounding communities. Originally opened as Delano Regional Medical Center in January 1974, the hospital evolved from its modest beginnings — with just 10 patients, 50 employees, 5 physicians, and 110 volunteers — into a sophisticated healthcare institution committed to serving Central California’s diverse population.

The anniversary event brought together community leaders, local doctors, current and past associates, and long-time supporters to honor the significant milestone. Over the past 50 years, Adventist Health Delano has facilitated more than 2 million outpatient clinic visits, 40,000 births, 200,000 surgical procedures, and 1.5 million emergency room visits, solidifying its role as a vital healthcare provider in the region.

Attendees were inspired by a lineup of esteemed speakers, including Jason Wells, President of the Central California Network, who shared insights into the hospital's rich history and its commitment to quality care throughout the Central Valley. Delano Mayor Joe Alindajao expressed appreciation for the hospital’s positive impact on the community, while California State Senator Melissa Hurtado highlighted the critical importance of legislative support for rural healthcare initiatives. Dr. Raul Ayala, Ambulatory Executive for Adventist Health’s Central California Network, emphasized the ongoing need for accessible care in rural areas, including the expansion of the Adventist Health medical residency program, where recently graduated doctors gain hands-on experience in specific disciplines of healthcare.

“As we celebrate our past achievements, we also look forward to the future”, said Dr. Raul Ayala. “Our physician residency program, a vital postgraduate training initiative where medical graduates gain hands-on experience in specialized areas of healthcare, will not only cultivate the next generation of healthcare professionals but also ensure that high-quality, accessible care remains available right here in the Central Valley for years to come.”
