Groin Discomfort Could Be a Sign of a Urological Problem

Pain or discomfort in the pelvic area can be concerning, especially when it’s caused by disorders of the prostate, urethra or bladder. The good news? Adventist Health Castle’s urologists have effective treatments and surgical options for urological conditions. Advanced technology such as the da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system means that operations can be done through smaller incisions, reducing pain and recovery time. Here’s what to know:

Urinary incontinence

The cause: When you are unable to hold your bladder or feel the need to go frequently, it may be caused by an enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which affects about half of all men ages 51 to 60.

The solution: While not all cases of BPH require treatment, if symptoms worsen, you and your provider may choose from options including lifestyle modification, medication and minimally invasive surgery.

Painful swelling

The cause: Swelling, pain, a dull ache or a painless lump in the testicle could be a sign of testicular cancer. About 1 in every 250 men will have this cancer in their lifetime.

The solution: Testicular cancer grows quickly but usually responds well to treatment. The testicle and tumor are often surgically removed, and additional treatment is typically not required.

Lower back discomfort

The cause: Intense pain in the back or side that progresses quickly or comes in waves could be caused by kidney stones, which affect 1 in 10 people. These rocklike deposits form in the kidneys when minerals in the urine don’t dissolve, usually a result of dehydration.

The solution: For smaller stones, over-the-counter pain relievers and hydration usually help the body pass them through urine. Larger stones may require a nonsurgical procedure, like lithotripsy, or a minimally invasive operation in which a provider breaks up the stones, allowing them to pass more easily.
