Breathe Easier This Holiday Season: Protect Against Pneumonia and Respiratory Illnesses
Nov 24, 2025
The holiday season brings the joy of family gatherings, travel, and cozy indoor celebrations — but it also brings a sharp rise in respiratory illnesses. At Adventist Health Glendale, we see this shift every year. Our infection specialists recently noted that pneumonia cases increased by 21% from spring and summer into fall and winter, with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza (flu) cases also climbing sharply during the same period. These patterns mirror national trends, as cooler weather and indoor gatherings create the perfect environment for respiratory viruses to spread.
“As temperatures drop, we notice a steady rise in patients with flu, RSV, COVID, and other respiratory illnesses — particularly in older adults and young children,” says Dr. Sylvia Kotikian, Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Adventist Health Glendale. “Our goal is to make sure people get expert care as early as possible — before a manageable infection becomes something more serious.”
Pneumonia: The hidden threat
While flu and RSV tend to dominate headlines, pneumonia remains one of the most serious respiratory illnesses, especially for older adults and those with weakened immune systems. Pneumonia occurs when bacteria, viruses, or fungi infect the lungs, filling the air sacs with fluid and reducing oxygen levels — making it harder to breathe.
“Pneumonia can develop as a complication from viral illness, like the flu or RSV,” explains Dr. Kotikian. “That’s why it’s vital to monitor symptoms and seek care immediately if they worsen.”
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), adults ages 65 and older are significantly more likely to develop pneumonia and face more severe outcomes (CDC, 2024).
“Even what seems like a mild cough or fever in an older or immunocompromised individual can progress quickly and become life-threatening,” Dr. Kotikian adds. “Recognizing the warning signs and seeking prompt evaluation is critical.”
When to seek care
If you or a loved one experiences any of the following, seek care right away:
- Shortness of breath or chest pain
- Fever of 102°F or higher
- Worsening cough or a cough producing blood or heavy mucus
- Oxygen readings below 92% on a pulse oximeter
