Breast Milk 101: The Amazing Ingredients in Breast Milk and Why They Matter

We often hear that breast milk is a healthy and nutrient-dense option for babies. But what makes this liquid superfood, and how does it benefit our babies in their first year of life? Vicki Pacheco, an Adventist Health nurse and International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant, breaks down just a few of the thousand components of breast milk and why they matter.

Colostrum

Colostrum is the rich, nutrient-dense milk that a mother's body creates to give a newborn powerful immune support at the very start of life. It is high in protein and filled with white blood cells that help your baby develop antibodies and strengthen their immune system.

Lactoferrin

Lactoferrin is a protein that is highest in human milk, specifically in the colostrum phase. Vicki explains, “It protects a baby's immune system and gut health in many ways,” due to its prebiotic and probiotic, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antiparasitic properties. It also helps with the baby’s absorption of iron — a crucial mineral that produces hemoglobin, transports oxygen in the body, supports overall cellular function, and more.

IgA

IgA plays another crucial role in a baby’s immune system. IgA coats surfaces, creating a barrier to help protect against systemic infections. “Think of this as your baby’s own personal bodyguard, taking hold of bad bacteria and harmful substances and telling them, ‘You're not welcome here, let me show you the way out,’” shares Vicki.
